Poked around at Encino Public Fishing Area in Carlsbad tonight. Caught a mystery fish that I believe might be a largemouth blenny. If it is, it's quite a bit outside it's documented range. It's definitely a new lifer!

Opaleye was also a new lifer. They were the most common fish along the rocks, with garibaldi coming in a close second.

Caught a buttload of juvenile kelp bass and barred sand bass. This kelp bass was the only "decent" one.

The rest of the bass were this size.

When it got dark I soaked half a squid on a large circle hook out where I thought the deepest part might be, but other than a few rod twitches it didn't get hit.

Didn't stay too late because we hadn't had dinner yet. Next time I'd like to sit after dark for a few more hours to see what wanders in from the ocean.
If the surf wasn't so rough, I'd say to hit South Mission Jetty or Hospitality Pt for microfishing, you'd do well!!
Dude, that might be a Largemouth Blenny? With the recent El Nino, it definitely looks like it, but I'll check my references also to help out.
Nice micro session.

That looks like a juvenile giant kelp bass.

Nope. Definitely a blenny of some type.
Nice variety! 8)
