I was making up some rigs to replace the 4 I lost a couple weeks ago and thought I would snap a few pics of my current set up. It is not the only rig I use, and the methods are not all my own invention, but more of a gleaning from the successes and failures from my experience and those of others.
Anyway, here we go.
First, tools and materials.
(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a167/kastama/202_zps897ae0bb.jpg) (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/kastama/media/202_zps897ae0bb.jpg.html)
(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a167/kastama/196_zps257d2d66.jpg) (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/kastama/media/196_zps257d2d66.jpg.html)
135# Nylon Coated Stainless Cable (24")
1mm Double Sleeve Copper Crimps (4)
3-Way Swivels (tossed the bag, not sure what size) (1)
Hook of Choice (I like 10/0 octopus)
Heat Shrink Tubing (1 1/2" of 3/8" diameter) (2)
80# mono (2 1/2')
Sinker of Choice (1)
Hand Crimper (cup to cup)
Lighter
High Power Reading Glasses
Assembly
First, I tie an offshore loop around the eye of the hook and double crimp it.
(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a167/kastama/197_zps64df882a.jpg) (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/kastama/media/197_zps64df882a.jpg.html)
Then I slide a section of heat shrink over the knot and the crimps and shrink it down while keeping the hook in my desired position.
(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a167/kastama/198_zpsed108c0a.jpg) (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/kastama/media/198_zpsed108c0a.jpg.html)
Then, this is important, slide the remaining two crimps and heat shrink tubing onto the cable before making another offshore loop around the swivel. Double crimp here as well.

And shrink tube.
(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a167/kastama/200_zps4985f964.jpg) (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/kastama/media/200_zps4985f964.jpg.html)
To another eye of the swivel, I tie the 80# mono, and attach a sinker. I like the sputnik type.
(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a167/kastama/IMG_1912_zps07c69789.jpg) (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/kastama/media/IMG_1912_zps07c69789.jpg.html)
Ready to fish.
Post up how you make yours, I'd like to see what is working for other folks.
Great write up Steve! I like the glasses in the first picture though. 8)
My rig is almost identical, so I'm good. Proven success.
I agree the first pic was funny with the glasses. I'm so there now :-[
Made a few like this recently sans the shrink wrap. Is that just for added confidence or does it serve a real purpose?
Also curious what knot you prefer on the 80lb.
Thanks!
Hey Dave, those are +3.00 glasses. Way more than I need for just seeing, but they make putting the crimps on way easy.
Tom came up with the heat shrink idea. I like it because it keeps the hook and swivel from getting twisted around or stuck in a weird position on the loop. Not sure how to explain. It doesn't hurt anything I can see.
For the knots in the heavy mono, I use a 3 turn uni knot. Haven't had one come undone and it is easy to tie.
Very nice looking stuff man, I use the same. And occasionally I'll use pulley rigs if I'm fishing light gear for leos. But lately I've bin obsessed with slide fishing, learning the ins and outs. So far only big rays on whole macks with it, but I feel I'll run into a good 1 soon ;) here's 1 I made

Very cool Ray, looks like a one way slide? I made a few slides to use off the pier, but I have only tried them a couple times and got no love.
Care to tell a little about how you are making them or fishing them? Leader length? Stop ring or straight tie to sinker?
No problem man, I use them so far just off the beach, I use 40 mainline, 80 shock, I believe a 150 snap swivel, and an 8oz sputnik. I make my non return clips out of 14 gage galvanized wire, and a 100# swivel. Haven't ordered any stop rings or else I'd use them. But so far just medium size bats and small sharks. I use 130 wire, about 18", I used to use longer but it would tangle to often, and 2 8/0 j hooks crimped at the head of mack, and the by tail. So far haven't used them at night only the day, and my fish were always within the 1st 20 or so mins of sliding my bait, so who knows if it actually reaches the sinker? I'm confident its a very good technique for over here, provided there's no kelp and your lead catches good
Cool deal Ray. Just may try my hand at making a couple. Just need to do a little scrounging at work and maybe I'll have a project while I wait for some concrete to dry. Think I'll stick with one hook. I have enough trouble with one and a mouth full of teeth.
Yeah 30ft of 14 gauge galvanized wire is like $9 @ home depot. I just get to many bait thieves where I fish at, hence the double hook, but I'm sure something will inhale my jumbo mack sure enough...
Just killed an hour tying up some more surf rigs myself tonight. I noticed I was getting low, so it was a perfect time re-stock.

Some XXX 10/0 shark rigs almost ready for packing. Just need to add the sinker leader.

Hopefully the sharks start making their showing again soon.
Nice stuff man, whats the deal on the shrink wrap? Like is it your usual from the hardware store, or a fishing brand?

I've noticed the leader or crimps sometimes rotating or getting turned into some bad angles on the swivel and hook that I didn't like with my older rigs. I liked using the snelled micro-strand steel leader which held the hooks outward for more hook ups, but the micro strand wire only came packaged up to 90# test. When I upgraded to 135# coated stainless steel wire, the small pieces of shrink tubing prevent the leader from slipping into the weird occasional angles on the swivel and hold the hook out straight on the other end like the snelled steel line.
Steve wasn't too sure at first when I started doing this, but I think he has had similar things happen to him and feels it only helps and definitely doesn't hurt anything.
I find it to make me much more confident in that type of fishing which is worth the few cents at least in my opinion. It's the same stuff you can pick up at Home Depot or ebay if you want to get more bang for your buck. 8)
Ray,
Did you craft a jig for bending those slide buckles?
Pm'd you Dave
Just made a batch myself and opted for the shrink wrap. I do like the way it holds the jewelry in the right position ... ;) :) :)
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Give a man some strong drinks... and he ties up a bunch of shark rigs. 8)

I always wonder if strong drinks had any part in several leader failures.

I always wonder if strong drinks had any part in several leader failures.
That has crossed my mind Steve, but I did not get blitzed. Just a nice head buzz and double checked every crimp with a good pull while locked in the vice.
I don't have a vice and tend to pour pretty strong. I decided to over build for security. Haven't had a failure since.
There is a window of PPI (perfect point of intoxication) which offers ultimate focus and concentration. However that 15-20 min window is typically followed by a cliff ... :o ;D ;D
Some of you are already familiar with this rig. Heres the way I do it...

Sometimes I will tie on a snap swivel to the end of the mono instead of directly to the sputnik. This allows you to just snap on a different size weight if desired.
The wire lengths are usually 3 feet.
Always double crimped for piece of mind.
Always use circles, ill use at least a 9/0 and up.
The tool with a bright handle is just a simple file. After catchin a fish on a rig, dragging it through the sand, the hook gets kinda dull. Ill just hit it with the file on a few different angles and its sharp again. Rigs are always rinsed with fresh water as well to ensure they last.
Very nice setup Eric, think I'll look into that afw wire
Very nice set up Eric. Lot's of cool variations of a proven rig!
Thanks for the great info and tutorials!
Do any of you sell these pre made rigs?
I'd love to get my hands on some to use until I can get the tools and materials to start making my own.

I have a couple tied up for sale. Message me.
:) :)
Sweet post fellas 8)
Heres a few w/ 2-3 ft. bite sections, 10/0 & 12/0 circles

Good looking rigs, Eric!
v. nice ...
Need to reload some 9/0 myself >:( >:( >:(
Just got a new batch of sputniks too ... >:(
Nothing happy about replacing tackle ;D
replacing tackle never ends, wish one of us could get it at wholesale prices.
I tried at couple places and got turned down. Ill be trying again another time.
You can find wholesale prices for slightly lesser gear on eBay in China. ;D
Seriously though, I use my gear once, maybe twice before pitching it or recycling the hardware. I know you (Eric H) want to sell top quality stuff, so this would not be it... but for the budget minded angler, this is a good alternative as I had almost most of my success on them.
What's up guys it's troy again... so I got questions .. I got a reel :) I spooled with 40 big game I tied a shock leader.. the no name knot.. now what? What knot do I use for the 3 way swivel.. and also for Rays no shock leader?
Hey Troy, for tieing 80lb to swivels I use a uni knot with three turns. Easy and does the job for me. For 40lb I use five turns.
Thanks for the info adequately!!! You da man!!! Any luck finding the alluminum angle iron lately?
Not yet. But I check every day.
So I have a couple questions regarding yalls shark rigs.
1) Why use a 3way swivel with sinker attached to one?
It seems like it would be prone to tangles. Does it aid in casting distance or just to be able to break off the sinker when snagged?
2)For those that dont use the 3-way, Do most of you use a sliding style sinker aka fish finder?
Also, I was doing some research on the infamous shark hunter trying to find clues to where he was fishing and I came across this rig that he used:
(http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y405/TheCraftsman805/SCSF/4E03D78A-CE3D-49BF-B400-3E3158E0915A_zpsb4s5opej.jpg) (http://s1273.photobucket.com/user/TheCraftsman805/media/SCSF/4E03D78A-CE3D-49BF-B400-3E3158E0915A_zpsb4s5opej.jpg.html)
Has anyone here tried using this style of rigging?
Haven't tried Brandon/shark hunter's rig. It obviously worked for him and I can see some advantages under some conditions. Keeping a bait up over a weed bed would be one. Maybe keep lobsters from chewing s bait on the bottom. I feel like the weight behind the hook, and the way the hook is attached to the mainline may make it prone to snags in a reefy area.
I do get some minor tangles in the three way rig. I like that it allows the bait to move around more and to be taken by the fish more easily with only one line coming from the hook. It also gives s partial hook set as the fish takes the bait and swims off as the Sputnik takes some pressure to release. I fish this rig with reel in gear with reduced drag and tighten the drag after a bite.
Never used a fish finder rig. Not a lot of confidence in the plastic slides and the three way allows the bait and sinker to be close together on the cast and still have a long steel bite leader.
Try a few rigs and see what works for you.
Finally made a few of my own. Hope to put them to the test soon!

Hmm, those hooks look familiar Chad. ;D

I can't quite see, what's going on with the wire to 3-way connection point? Do you have the wire double looped and twisted through the swivel's eyelet, like a haywire but you double crimped the tag end instead of twisting?....If your shrink tubing has the diameter try tying a couple where you slide the shrink down all the way over the hook eye and down its shank to the bend or as far as it will go. I think Ron refers to this as stealth. But also on the other end bring the shrink up over the connecting loop and over the swivel eye so that connection will be almost stiff and the leader can't dangle around loosly where it meets the swivel. You can see how this helps alot from preventing the wire leader from twisting up around your shock leader by hanging the tied on finished rig upside down by holding the sinker and letting the hook on wire leaer just hang there. Notice how the hook stands a bit out and away from the main line? Thats good because during a cast that seperation makes it hard for the hook leader to twist back around the main line...
