: First Puddle-Trout Trip of the Season (11/4)
: Latimeria November 04, 2024, 07:30:43 p
I ran down to the lakes after work... I got to the shack, and they informed me that only 2 of the 3 lakes were stocked due to an aeration problem with the truck.  Damn.  I head to where I normally fish and there were people there.  I knew that some big lightning trout made it from a few pics I was sent, so I was hopeful.

Set the rods out and immediately realized the amount of grass in the ponds.

It wasn't looking good, but I moved down a bit and within 15 minutes saw my strike indicator going erect!

I was on and thought it felt very Trout like, but nothing huge.  Then I see the other rod double over!  I get my fish in and see it's not a trout, but my first whisker trout of the season!

I grab the other rod and this definitely felt like a trout!  Then I hear a huge splash!  I look up and it took a minute to realize what I was looking at, but realize it was an osprey taking off with a trout and my line in his claws!

UGH!!!  The 2# broke, but the sinker was attached at least, so only the tiny hook was lost.  I go up to retie after casting the other rod out and I'm almost immediately on again!  This felt a little bigger, but then I realized it was wrapped with grass and cabbage.  As it came up, I saw a hint of a fat yellow back and the line snapped!  Ugh!  Did I see what I thought I saw?  I'll never know, but I think I had a Lightning Trout...

An hour later and it was about 20 minutes from closing when I saw the strike indicator go off again!  Fish on!
This time I realize it was a nice Catfish.  A few minutes later and the Ultralight Rod did its job with a much better model!

Well, I made another cast and started packing as they were starting to throw people out.

2 for 4.... Cats are apparently much easier to catch.  lol

I saved them for my coworker who loves catfish, so my permit fee has been paid for.  LOL

I might go tomorrow in order to avoid all news.  I want to be as far away from any TV as possible.

Thanks for reading!

'Tis the season for your trout slaying. I'm sensing you'll pick up where you left. Pretty solid start already!

Getting robbed by an Osprey doesn't happen every day, too bad it got away with your trout :o

I still think you should be filming your outings, you always attract some kind of excitement 8)

Nice. I did a morning stroll around puddles yesterday AM. A bunch of dead ones at the ramp. Saw a few breezers with one decent size lightning trout. All were spotted away from the masses lol. Most trout I saw on a stringer was one by guys throwing/snagging with mini jigs.
