Thought I had a winner only to get home and see I'm still a second fiddle ... :-[ :P ;D ;D
Paul and I ventured back to the same spot in three days. Eels on Tuesday, got a solo soup Wednesday, and conditions looked too damn nice so why not.
First shark came around 9pm. Good fight but on the smaller side.
Get it on the beach and she's gut hooked, hanging stomach out the mouth. Didn't want to mess around so took a quick pick and cut the wire. Taped to 66" ... hope she makes it. :( :(

Second fish was the nice one. Hit around 10p and put up a pretty good fight.
Paul went to tail grab and could see he was having issues, but was too far away to get a good view.
Tail roped and dragged her up. Really nice size soup. Tripped when Paul called out 76" on the dot. New PB
Pictures never do justice but she was thick and heavy. Tried to pick her up for a shot - she wasn't down with that (neither was my back really)

As far as rod and reel go, a 12' spinner and reel with some capacity on it is a common set up for sale on some of the boards. Many times you can get both under $100 and sometimes even $60. It would at least be a start to get some time in and some techniques down.
As for the steel leader rigs, we have a few links on the tackle board. Here is Sasquatch's set up. Well written and informative besides being easy to tie up.
