Upper left is a vermilion from less than 200'. Brick red color. One up from lower left is a sunset from 360'. Orangeish color.

These are all sunsets from 450'.

Around Mission Bay and La Jolla I feel like I caught sunsets deeper than 250', and vermilions were 200' or less. Sometimes it was hard to tell which they were while still alive, but once they died they settled on the brick red vs orange. Disclaimer: I am not a biologist.

Welcome to team dry and boring!

Pros: Better sleep, less inflammation/sore joints, less depression (if that's a risk).

Cons: It's harder to celebrate stuff. Alcohol is huge for celebrations. People can get annoying when they keep asking why you don't drink.

Best of luck Tom!

I'm having a slow pitch blank wrapped that's been sitting in my garage for the past 7 years and pairing it with a siegler small game lever drag filled with 30lb braid. I can't wait to see what I can jig up from 1,000+ ft

I wish I had been using 30 lb in CA. Had 65 lb on my deep drop reel, switched to 30 lb when I moved to FL. It's so much better having less bow in your line.

I skunked out at 1000 feet half a dozen times using squid and shrimp. Switched to sardines and caught sablefish both times right before I moved.

lol, well, I'm on a Black Cod hunt this year when the season opens!  Time to also look for some deepwater flounder!

Stop it, I can only get so horny!

Obviously I don't have a dog in the fight since I don't live there, but hopefully this helps the size of the nearshore rockfish increase a bit? I always thought it would be better to spread out the fishing pressure by opening up to all depths. There's a lot of ocean out there.

Tough situation though when you incidentally catch rockfish with severe barotrauma and have to "release" them, even with a descending device.

Thanks for the report! Are you heading out and just looking for 1000-1200 ft, or are you picking out good structure at those depths as well? I know the fish finder won't show much once you're that deep, but you can find good spots with Google Earth or some other tool ahead of time and focus on those spots.
