I also don't think it would be such a big deal, if you guys weren't doing it on a highly populated beach, in the summer, during the day.
I purposefully seek out lonely stretches of beach and fish mostly at night in order to keep the public off my back.

I prefer to fish in the daylight on any beach I legally can, I didn't pay for a license to hide and sneak around at night. The crowds help pass the time, most are tourists that have lots of questions. I think stories like this are more positive on the sport than stories on guys that don't know what they are doing. If there are no positive stories, the negative ones will represent all licensed and unlicensed fishermen in the eyes of the public.

That beach is very deep right up to shore, kinda like the wedge in NP but not as extreme, there is not really any skinny there to see what is one your line until it is over the break and you run up to it, and jump back.

They said it had superficial wounds but nothing that would of killed it. If it would of died at sea something would of taken a bite out of it before it hit the beach. Just them washing ashore is very rare.

Yea, saw that. First thing I thought when I heard this story. To bad they will end up punishing everyone with more regs.

Nicely done, at least you found some fish. i have been d!ckin around with this stuff.

Took the cattle boat out last week and the kelp fields all look like they are dead off shore from Dana Point to San Onofre. Stuff is going to be coming in for awhile unless that storm surge can break it all free out there.

Does it have to be caught in California? I will be in the catfishy waters of North Texas in July.

Ray Jay texted me and said you caught four "Minus One's" and a 9 inch bat.  That put you at minus three for the night.   ;D

Glad you got out Chip.  The OC hotline has been pretty quiet lately.

ahahahahha, yea the sand in SOC has been unfishable lately, depending on your tolerance for losing gear.

On the other hand, this is killing me.  I use Mustad Demon 12/0 hooks, Spro Swivels & Sputnik sinkers.  Between that and the wire/crimps, it's costing me almost $9.00 a break off.  It feels like I might as well throw my wallet out in the ocean.  Adding Denny's break offs,  I'm well over a hundred dollars in terminal tackle in 3 trips   :(

I feel ya, I have lost more rigs in the last month than I have in the last year.

Look Out Right ;D

I will bring my hardhat. I tried that cast with a spinning reel a while back and didnt have a glove. Braid sliced right through my finger, thats when I started using a golf glove. Could not figure out how to get the bounce out when I turned so it is one fluid motion.

Let me see what I can find out. They dont live there just own the property there and rent it out to tourists. I think I have the info for the guy that manages it and he lives there so he will know more. I'll shoot him an email. Its always been a fishing village, seems without fishing the economy there would collapse.

You wont need a fishing license from shore, and can use just one rod. I am not sure if you will need a license to fish from a yak, not sure how they classify it but need one to fish from a boat.
