It's just full bone in ribeye, but generally twice as thick as a normal ribeye without the Frenching of a cowboy steak.  It's just a really thick cut... And damn tasty!

Never saw the appeal of the tomahawk steak. I guess it looks cool but is there more to it?

Food & Recipe / 36 Ounce Tomahawk Steaks
Last post by Latimeria - October 28, 2024, 01:25:08 PM
My two buddies and I usually get together in the winter to have a guys night of darts, drinking and eating great food.  With my looming jobless status coming early next year, I figured it was as good as a time as any to have the party a little early

I ordered these huge steaks from NYC, since the store gets their meat from upstate NY.  Beef out there is just a little different.... better.....

They were supposed to come trimmed, but I did a little more trimming to get it just right.

Seasoned with butter and fresh Thyme in the vacuum sealer.

I threw them in the Sous Vide for 4 hours to get them at a perfect medium rare.

I coated them with course ground pepper and hit the hot cast iron to give it some bark!

Sides:

Grilled Baked Potatoes

Shrimp c*cktail

Corn on the Cob

Grilled Asparagus

The first two bottles of the 6 we uncorked.

I'll be broke for a bit. but playing darts with my buds while eating and drinking like kings was all worth it.  Now it's time to tell the wife we're having Top Ramen when they get back from Disney.  LOL

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Morning Freezer Run (10/27)
Last post by Latimeria - October 28, 2024, 01:14:13 PM
I was hoping some repairs I did to the boat were working and I haven't taken the bout out in a while, so a quick grocery run to restock the freezer was in order.

Hit the deepwater spots and back to the barn by noon was the plan since I had buddy's coming over for dinner while the wife and kids were away.

New trailer lights...  Fail.  Got to find why they aren't getting power.

Bled hydraulic lines (In hopes I didn't have to replace the helm)... Nope... Definitely have to replace the helm... Damn

Right shoulder.... still f@cked.

Ugh....  Hit the deep-water money spot only to find it was tough catching but managed some fish.

After getting some rockfish, I went to explore to find some fresh grounds and found the mother load of Green Blotched with a Mexican in the mix!

Save one spot to fill with my limit of Vermillion and ran back to hump.  Fish jumped on it the second my jig hit bottom.

Got home in time to start the Tomahawk steaks and proceeded to play darts with buds, drink a LOT of really good wine, and listen to some old school metal.  3 am and we finally crashed.  I'm hoping my neighbors will talk to me now, and if not then I guess that will work also.

Ugh, I feel like garbage....  but the 36 oz tomahawks were on POINT!  lol

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Re: Finally Back to the Ocean

Funny, I used to see and catch loads of senoritas and haven't even seen one in the last 10 years.  They are like mini piranha when they get schooled up...  and I'm always amazed what big smelt will get hooked on.   ;D

Damn, great seeing your report.  I need to drag my ass back out to the surf but Boat fishing has taken up most of my time.

A good Long Rod Session sounds good about now, the boat conditions are not favorable for the next week or so ;)

Thanks for the report. I saw some mackerel outside the break the other day at Sunset Beach but it's generally been a bit scant on them lately.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Finally Back to the Ocean
Last post by Dark_Knight_9C1 - October 26, 2024, 01:05:07 PM
Haven't been back to the ocean to fish for too long...
Made it a point to get out to the Newport jetty this morning and fish.
Got there at gray light and threw out a sabiki to get some mackerel to restock my bait stores. Didn't take long to start getting bites. After the first few swing and misses, I hooked into one... a good size smelt. Made sense then why I was missing so on so many bites.
A few casts later, a solid bite and the first mackerel came in.
I set up a long pole with big chunks of fresh mackerel and tossed that out.
Continued getting short bites every cast, then finally hooked into something small. A senorita fish came in. That explained all the short bites.
Next the long pole started to bob. Went to check it out and whatever it was had gone. I later reeled it in to check the bait and it looked untouched. Was probably an ambitious smaller fish.
I decided to put some squid on the long rod. I had bought a 1 lb squid and cut it into usable pieces. I put on a chunk of tube and a tenicle the size of my finger onto the 6/0 hooks.
Not long after the squid hit the water the pole stared bouncing again. I could feel lots of short bites again but figured the small fish couldn't get the hook in there mouth so I let it set. Then I got a good bite, swung and the pole loaded up a so I reeled it in. Found a 14 inch smelt which managed to get hooked. I didn't see how it was hooked because it shook off after landing it. My guess is I hooked it somewhere other than the mouth just by chance.
That was pretty much it. Made some bait and got the line wet again.
I had been hitting Big Bear Lake since spring carp spawn bowfishing. It was nice to get back to the ocean again.
