Went to go catch bait and just lost some. Net bait loss.
I can only fish a few precious hours a week and chasing bait waste those few hours

If you can't catch bait you can usually buy it at a local Asian market...

I'm with Eric on this one, I don't have time to fish the pier (too many wierdos anyways).  There is a small Asian market that is on my way to the beach, so it works for me  8)

I have been using store bought fish but they are really far from fresh. I am hearing of surf perch coming back so that is at least a bait to hunt while the long rod soaks.

If you can't get some half way decent fin bait from the store and fresh bait is hard to come by, soak some squid. I usually pin on 2-3 depending on the size of the squid. It can be hard to get the critters to leave it alone, but it is candy to most surf denizens. Ive gotten some big bats and leos off of squid, not to mention how fun a big shovel can be on the long rod.

I have  been working the squid Mike. The last macs I bought barely bled.
Got some whole baby octopus at Ranch 99 that are about tennis ball size for the next surf session.

And no takers?  Wow! Well, it has been a while since I've hit the surf do I don't know how much El NiƱo has affected our fishing in regards to big game stuff. I'm really surprised no exotic grinners have been caught.

Must have been those no blood havin white meated Norwegian mackerel. I've caught and seen others catch with them but I still don't like them.

spideyjg

Yep that damn Norwegian stuff.

Best thing I have had were some rat yellowtail once.

The squid has produced some Mike but everyone that catches more than me seems to be using fresh caught fin bait.

I'll use squid if that's all I have. Or if I'm light on bait and need to save it for the more productive hours of a session.
