Don't think you have to kill one. From reading through this, I don't think weight is necessary. Measurement, using official IFGA ruler and pics works.

I think when I looked into it some last year, it depends on the individual species. Some species have a catch and release record as well as the general record. If I remember correctly, there were a couple lmb caught that were weighed and exceeded the world record, but the anglers decided to release instead of kill the bass for the record.

Another site keeps track of shark (catch & Release) records ... but only the big bad cool ones. Not our passive 6-9ft types ...  :P :P :P
