I've got 3 saltist bg's and am absolutely in love with them.

I was looking at the fathom and it's mentioned that they have a better casting ability.

Any feedback on this or anything else?

I have two fathom 30's, but have yet to cast them since I'm waiting on 2 custom wrapped rods for them. Mike loves his 40. I always loved buying different reels to use. I use to tend towards shimano, but i like what penn has been putting out the past few years.
I can't wait to test them.
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

My fathom 30 should be here on Wednesday. Hopefully I'll get a chance to cast it this weekend. Gotta tear it down and do a service check on the insides. I've read good things about how penn is lubing and greasing inside the fathoms. Hopefully will just need a little cal's on the drags and make sure they are set for max drag. I'm not sure what configuration they're set from the factory.

thanks

looking forward to hearing how they perform

I've had both the Saltist BG's and I currently own Fathoms. Both cast great with the Fathom coming out on top. Drags are better on the Fathom and it is pretty cool that you can change out the gearing  on them as well if you prefer a slower retrieve. The Saltist does have a nice durable finish. Although the Saltist is cheaper retail-wise, deals can found for Fathoms if you have the patience to look. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either, but I lean more towards the Penn Fathoms. I think ultimately, price will be the determining factor for most. I was able to to get 2 Penn FTH40 for less than $140 each with free shipping  ;D
