My wife wanted to sleep in late today and I made plans to get my daughters and I out to brunch and on a nature walk afterwards.  This gave me a few hour window in the morning to hit the bay again and hopefully have a better trip than I did yesterday.  I tied up one of my painted lead heads as it just looked like it was going to save the day if my topwater plans are a bust.

I opted to try another section of the bay and see if I could catch me a topwater vina.  I couldn't get anything to rise on my bait, so I switched to the swimmy.  On my second cast aster re-tying, I hook something nice!  I think I feel good head and/or tail thumps when I finally get a glimpse of it.  I snagged a bat ray in the wing with the swimmy and now had to try and get my rig back without busting it off.  Thankfully, the hook popped out as I was dragging it to shore.

I re-tie and a dozen casts later I get bit hit followed by a run parallel to the shoreline.  Then, my target came to the surface thrashing like crazy.  it was an 18" looking model and did the whole crazy twirl and thrash before running at me and spitting the hook.  Oh well, it was a good start anyway.

I only had a set amount of time, so I worked only a 100 yard section of shoreline.  Bites were far and few in-between, but after missing 3, I finally got on the board with back to back 11" bass in 2 casts.  Second one got a sportsman's release as I was trying to pull my phone out for a pic, but they put up a great fight.

I couldn't buy another bite and started to head home.  On the way I stopped by an old honey hole for a few casts and found a pack of runts that over doubled my counts this morning. Smaller fish, but they were all bunched up and I didn't even have to step away.

The last of 3 here which put me at 5 bass in 2 hours.  Not great, but a hell of a lot better than yesterday morning.  The corvina would have been the icing on the cake, but that's how it goes sometimes.

This week, I'm going to increase the gear size a little and see how it goes.  I figure if every week I raise the bar slightly, I should be back to hucking big baits in the surf by the end of the month or start of next month at the latest.

Thanks for reading.
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Those s potties can sure be aggressive when they want to be. Even while bassin', you get a bat ray. Classic.
I think the bat rays are calling to you.
