What's up guys it's troy.. I got a long rod.. 12 ft ugly .. now I need a reel... any ideas for a good reel that last? Conventional reel.. I'll be using 40lb mono and need, I think? at least 300 yards for sharking any suggestions is appreciated. I'm still new to this game and don't know much about it..

A Penn Jigmaster 500 could suffice and are workhorses.

Since I don't know what your budget is, I'll just throw some brands out that are typically less than $150 brand new and have good to great castability:

Daiwa Sealine
Daiwa Seagate
Penn 500
Penn Squall
Shimano TLD 20/40

As you can see, lots to choose from and I've only just scratched the surface on what's out there. Lots of variables need answering first so you can narrow down your options.

Daiwa 50 might be your best bet for 40# mono. I use a Daiwa 40 with 30# mono backed with 150yds of 50# braid.

The tackle shop down the street has a shimano torium 20 used with 50 pound braid on it with some kind of upgrade on it for $150 .. is that a good buy.. I'm trying to stay on a budget and away from the braid.. how much line do I need on my reel to be fishing for sharks off the beach? My price budget is $150.. out of the ones you listed.. wich one would you buy.. I got money right now and need to buy it soon before the money's gone ;)

I'm a big fan of the Daiwa Sealine, good bang for the buck.  Personally I perfer the "X" with a little highter ratio............V

For what we do, Bay / Surf critters, I love the Sealine 40 i bought a few months back from Squidco. Think it was $114 brand new. Has more than enough line capacity and drag for these near shore beasts. Casts like butter. Been really happy. Have 65# braid backing (about 250 yards) and 40# topshot (about 100yrds) ... works out to something like 60% braid / 40% mono spool...(or something like that)

I have Torium's as well 20 & 16 ... but really just use those mainly for offshore / boat fishing.

Hell ... caught one of my largest bats on a plastic Okuma Pro ($45) reel ...  :P :P ;D ;D ;D

Good luck with whatever you get. Don't need to break the bank.
