What is it about the Back Bay that causes something crazy to happen every time we fish there? You would think that after 3 rods and reels being pulled in everybody would have learned to always check your drag before walking away from your rod. But no. Charles is visiting for the July 4th holiday from Arizona and is looking forward to some surf fishing. He does his first cast of the day, sets his rod in the holder and goes to get a cold one. Bang. Rod goes bendo and it's gone. Charles is totally pissed he lost a nice fish, lost his $200 rig, and now doesn't have anything to fish with for the next 4 days. Then my rod goes bendo, I grab it, and I'm hoping I snagged Charles line so I can get his gear back. Nope, it's a different fish. Then Charles looks about 100+ yards out in the middle of the bay and sees what he thinks is the butt end of his rod floating out of the water. A small boat is passing by and we ask them if that's a fishing rod out there. They reply that it is, but just keep cruising. Charles is dying. He can see his rod but there's nothing he can do about it. Then a guy in one of those inflatable dingys with a 3hp outboard comes along. We yell at him for help. He sees the rod, grabs it, and the fish is still on! That fish on a 12' rod gave that guy everything he wanted in that small boat. He brings up a ray, and leaving it in the water, comes into shore and passes the rod back to Charles. From happy to totally bummed and back to happy in about 15 minutes. We measured the ray, only 25", but it took a 12' rod like it was nothing!
Anybody have an emergency beer?

I know about the rod going into the water, but my story didn't have as good of an ending as yours.  ;)
