Garden thread 2016

No time to hit the sand much lately but the garden is taking off. San Marzano, Roma, celebrity, and Rutgers tomatoes, Red, orange, and cajun bell peppers, Tabasco chilies, rosemary, sweet and lemon basil, and garlic.

The bottles make it look like a litter pile but I'm using watering spikes from Harbor freight and soda bottles to more effectively water them.

My garden is killing it right now.  I'll post pics later but your garden looks great!

The San Marzano on the left is starting to outweigh it's cage. The Roma had the first tomato ripen but it had blossom end rot.

I put lots of calcium in there but apparently not enough for the Roma. None of the others seem to have the problem but time will tell. The red bell pepper has 2 peppers nearly dwarfing the plant itself. The Tabasco is the slowest grower.

Not much skill Chad just dug a level spot, strained out the rocks, mixed in compost and Miracle gro garden soil, planted stuff and keep watering. Used a garden bed frame from Costco and put 1/4" mesh wire on the bottom to keep out the damn gophers!

I use a gallon jug to capture that morning water waiting for hot water to water with.

This was a week and a half ago, so everything is much bigger now, but it is booming.  Just grilled yellow-neck squash last night as our first harvest of the year.

We're hoping to get out of our rental and buy something in the next few months.
One of my goals is to start a garden then.  Just a couple things at first to get my feet wet.
I'd also like to have a few trees.  Avocado, orange, lemon, apricot???
Any suggestions?

My view is to plant what you love to eat.

I would never have evil squash

Avocado use lots of water. My neighbor had some and some disease  took them all out. I have a bay leaf tree in a pot and will plant a lemon tree.

Like Jim said, plant what you'll eat. As far as fruit trees, I went lemon, apple, loquat, and plum. I also did blueberries, watermelon, and green seedless grapes. Veggies, I went tomatoes and cucumbers. Also, don't over do it to the point that you can't keep up and get in over your head.

I got a late start this year but I got it going   I'll put up pics when it takes off. Everyone's garden looks great !

Lots of harvests like this... I think I might need to switch things up again and do a second planting soon.  Some of my plants expired from fruiting so much.

My tomatoes have a little more viable fruit but are toast. I may dig them out, refresh the soil and replant.

Tabasco peppers are going off so the dehumidifier will get a workout soon.
