Peter Feast and Jim Ewing were fishing for snapper and whiting a half-mile off Port Macdonnell in South Australia when a thresher shark suddenly crashed the party.

Feast had hooked into something big that peeled off quite a bit of line before throwing the hook, but moments later the big fish showed itself.

"Next thing you know, this thresher shark jumped completely clear of the water and splashed down," Ewing told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. South East SA.

That wasn't the end of it, however. The shark leaped out of the water twice more.

"We have never seen anything like this before in our lives," Ewing said. "The next thing I could see was this head and mouth coming over his [Feast's] shoulder, and it crashed into his shoulder as it came through. It landed flat, bang on the deck of the boat between the two of us."

As sharks are known to do, the thresher shark then thrashed around and smashed one of Feast's fishing rods, but it could've been far worse.

"It could well have broken his neck or if it had opened its mouth it could've lacerated an artery," Ewing told 7 News.

Ewing used his boots to trap the thresher shark's head against a tackle box while Feast tied a rope around its tail to subdue the uncontrollable shark.

Two fishermen nearby witnessed the entire thing and confirmed the story on the ABC South East SA's Facebook page.

"The power that tail can generate in order for a great big shark like that to totally clear the ocean, man, there is some power in it," Ewing told ABC.

The fishermen decided to release the shark but needed help. They motored to shore and got some assistance from a couple of guys.

"Unfortunately it thrashed a little bit, but we couldn't get it going," Ewing said. "I guess it had just been out of the water for too long. It was kind of tragic we couldn't get it back in the water and do the right thing."

Instead, they measured the thresher shark and began cutting it up into fillets.

The shark measured 10 1/2 feet, which was just shy of the length of their 14-foot boat, and will provide the pair with delicious shark steaks for quite a while.

"We will be eating thresher shark fillets for the next month or two," Ewing said.
