Andre and I met up at 6:00 this morning to give it a go.  He hooked up first, I thought it was a big bat.  But after a 10 or 15 minute fight it broke off.  When we looked, it destroyed his 135 lb wire leader.  About 6" of it was completely frayed.  About 15 minutes later my rod starts twitching, put the reel in gear and set the hook.  Within 15 seconds it went completely airborne and landed on it's side.  Then it took off for Catalina and I felt that all too familiar "ping", it broke off about 2' for my shock leader.  Re tied and put another bait out, 15 minutes later I get hit again.  After it ran around a little bit it surfaced and started south.  We watched the dorsal and tail fins for probably 50 yards, then it submerged and put it in turbo mode.  It ran over 200 yards without slowing and only made big splashes once.  I gained back close to 100 yards of line before it decided to make the dash out to sea.  After a 15 minute tug o war I felt that "ping" one more time.  Looking at the line this time it broke the knot at the swivel, knot still intact with two tags.  I know, I never should have gone out with a shock leader that has broken off twice.  Called it quits in time to make my folks lunch and take my mom for blood work.

Better than watching a dead line  Verne. More frustrating but better.

I'm still new to this game, but that fish I had on, bit threw a hundred and thirty five pound coated wire leader. Vern's two hookups went aerial twice and took him for long rides up and down the beach. I think it's time to call, the Sensi!  ;)

Sounds like fun. Was the jumper a T, soupie or white?

I'd post my rigs, but I've done that before and nobody uses them.  ;D
Keep it tight

Yes, Vern's first definitely, looked like a Soupfin. The second one, we saw the dorsal fin and tail, just before it dipped back down and snapped his line.

I had a similar thing happen after I made full claim that 135# cable was good enough.  I caught something that chewed right through it... ugh

Keep striking while the iron is hot, though!  Man, I'm dying for you to get one of them in!  That could have been the contest winner for the custom wrapped Rainshadow Rod!!!

You can't catch them from your computer chair.

I bumped it up to 170 (Steel leader).  I know it's not too much bigger, but it still has a good feel as bait presentation goes.  I also bumped my shock leader up to 100# from 80# and went from 20' to 25' to help with them rolling in it.  I can't say this will help for sure, but it definitely won't hurt!

Could it be that you are getting cut off by structure vs. the fish bitting through your line? How far out are you getting your baits? I would be surprised to think the taxman is coming close enough to be within normal casting distance.  ???
