I was doing so good, but after another "typical" week, I decided I was going to have some drinks to forget about life for a while.  I had plans to jump on my buddy's boat, but I already warned him that I may not be able to wake up when he wanted to leave, so I told him he'd have a one word text in the morning.  I actually said to not rely on me, but I think he was interested in seeing what I texted.

My alarm went off at 3:00 am, and I texted two words and some punctuation.   "Ooomph....Nope...."  This was followed by a bunch of laughing emojis on his end.

I woke up at 7:00 am and did not feel good, but the marine weather was looking good, and I really wanted to try and get the Black Gill record.  I loaded up my boat and ran down to the bay.  I pretty much forgot everything but remembered 3 waters and a pack of bait, so I was good.  I was second guessing myself, as the drunk was wearing off, I was going into full blown "Yuck" mode.

I get to the ramp and what in the holy name of satan is this?  Spot Lock on a jet ski???

I get out the inlet and it was 5x rougher than what they were calling for.  I called my buddy on the radio and he went to LJ looking for yellows instead of BFT because of the sea conditions.  He had his buddy and his buddy's kid on board, so they weren't slamming into the seas for 40+ miles.

I decided to just head out to the rockpile and deep drop instead of messing around with yellows with the fleet of summer folk.  I wanted my Black Gill, but stopped for my Reds.  Funny, I dropped a whole squid down on my line counter and couldn't get bit.  I drop down my little spinner and it was instantaneous!  I guess they were clued in on certain baits.

The weather doesn't look that bad in the pictures, but they were sharp small period waves that was impossible to drive fast in without launching.

I really wanted to use the line counter rod, but once again nothing.  Just for sh!ts and giggles, I dropped down the little jig and instantly went bendo!  Definitely clued in on small baits.

I wasn't going to drop again since my forearms were cramped up from me being dehydrated.  I put down a bottle of water and started to head out.  I didn't make it far before realizing I wasn't going to get to the Nine on this day.

I metered around in 600 feet and saw a lot on the meter.  Boscos for sure.  I used my line counter reel which was amazingly fun driopping that far except that my dehydrated condition was proving to be brutal on my muscles from reeling in.

Saw lots of Blue whales and all the whale watchers (both commercial and recreational) were out literally right next to me ooing and awwing.

Back to work.

No shortage of Mexicans down there also.

Double header on one Jig...

Got my limit and called around to see what people were doing.  All of my buddies out there were barely scratching, but yellows were around, just not feeding on bigger baits.

I decided to cut my losses and head in.  I looked at my watch and it was already 1:30!  It made sense soon as I realized that I didn't get down there until 8:30.  lol

Well, no records for me.  I was so busy cleaning the boat and fish, it was dinner before I was done and then an early night for me.  Hell, I think I'm still hungover today.

Well, thanks for reading and until next trip!  I heard from Josh and he got a nice soupie off the beach last night.  Hopefully he posts here.  I can't beieve the first shark on the list for 2024, will be in June.  LOL

Record blackgill is 7lbs 12oz, bringing that up from 1000' while hungover would be quite the feat.

Nice limit. Short swell here yesterday as well but really nice today. I get woozy when it's short like that and I'm well rested, you're an animal for taking them on in your state of being.

My buddy has beaten the record 12 times already, but caught them on electric reels.  I have the numbers, but wanted to do it by conventional reel.  Unfortunately, couldn't get out there.
