Boat/Trailer in the shop...

I have neglected the trailer for far too long.  I saw my tire was shredded and remember the piece of metal in the road I hit, so need to get some new tires and rims on.  I also wanted to inspect the brakes and hubs.

Broke my only two sockets that fit.  Unfortunately, I didn't have a impact socket big enough.



Went out to but the right size, and they weren't coming free.

WD-40 and a torch helped loosen things up enough to get the starboard side off.

WTF.... Now I know what was rattling on my trailer every time I drove next to some K-Rail on the road.



Ummmm..... there's still some life there!



Put the new rim and tire on and went to the other side.  Same issues, only this time bolts broke.



Just needed a little WD-40 and it's all good.



Dropped it off at the shop the next day.  It will definitely cost me a few grand, but I need to get my boat to the water.  Soon as I get it back, it's time for actual boat work!

The part of saltwater boat ownership that drives me nuts, especially with the care I usually give back to the boat.

Hope to hear word tomorrow on what needs to be done.

  That's a lot of damage...hope it's not too expensive. Pretty, uhhh remarkable stuff.

I've heard a select few guys take the time to wash their trailer after putting the boat in and they have a lot better time with trailer maintenance/replacement. At the very least maybe bring a soapy water hand pump to hit moving parts real quick before taking off. After seeing this post alone I know I'll be doing that once I get a trailer boat.

I clean the trailer with fresh water after every trip.  This damage is from my neglect, so I'm paying for the lack of annual maintenance I should have been performing.

I wash mine too but I think most of the damage happens when you park the trailer after launching the boat, it sits there all day while you are fishing and the salt is already doing it's corrosive, destructive damage  

Hope you get it fixed at a reasonable cost

I got my quote to fix the trailer and it's pretty much where I feared it may be, but after closer inspection of the quote, I realized there is something I don't need.

I did ask to see what it would cost to recarpet the bunks.  The bunks are made of composite material and not wood, so are in great shape.  The carpet however needs replacing, or another level of carpet added.  Apparently, they must not recarpet bunks because $1,000 of my cost was for new bunks?  I'm guessing they just want to take the old ones off and put new ones on, but that saves me a grand from my bill.

Good thing is my axle is salvageable, but the old oil hubs need to be retrofitted for grease hubs.  Otherwise, I'm hoping this doesn't take too long and I can start getting the boat out again.

Dang. We noticed the carpet worn away to the wood when we returned once. Quick trip to HD for cheap roll of carpet and a stapler fixed that real quick. How is it fastened to composite?

Bummer Tom.  My trailer has one oil hub leaking, not sure whether to repair or convert it.  Good luck
