Coated cable 100% for casting to sharks. Single strand is good in the heavier #15-19 for much bigger applications but anything lighter gets destroyed in the surf.

From a boat #10-12 has worked well for me for rigging many lures and baits and I love #6 for yoyo fishing and trolling irons.

The Hawaiians use 8-10" of #19 on thier slides for ULUA. Anything longer tangles and kinks in shore conditions.
