Can anyone suggest any good spots around the Mission Bay area to catch mackerel?  I would be land bound.

Crystal Pier has usually an abundance of macks around the pilings, but Shelter Island Pier on SD bay is another hot spot.  If you are stuck to Mission Bay, then the jetty rocks near the Hyatt all the way around to the jetty are usually good, but those areas are usually a morning or night bite.  I haven't got any recent intel lately since I'm just getting back fishing since my recovery, but those place are historically good.

I might target some fresh bait here this weekend and will post up any recent intel that I come across.  Maybe someone else on here has some recent intel that could chime in.

If you have to check out your local Asian market.

They usually have fresh macks. May not always be locally caught but thats not necessarily a bad thing. I've done really well with the Norwegian macks..

I assume you are all using sabiki's if catching macks from the pier, but what do you use if you are trying to catch them off of the rocks or jetty?

I throw 3/8 to 1/2 oz cast masters.  I also switch the hook to a single siwash hook for easier and cleaner removals from the macks mouth without tearing him up.

It's pretty much the go to lure and we usually get the occasional bonito on it also.

Go to Shelter Island. Solid bite during the in-coming tide. Completely shut down an hour before sunset. Squid strips, small hook and a split shot. Bobbers will help even more. I fished there last night, got a few. Binh was there a few days earlier, he got a few as well.

Great information.  The last time we tried for bait was off the rocks at Quivera Point right where the marina goes out but only a Barrie wanted to play. I believe that is in the area for Mission Bay, along the rocks?
Probably Shelter Island pier maybe my best option for live. I'm looking into which Asian markets are on my way from Escondido. Lucky Seafood sounds like the best bet.
I have aquired two 12 ft long rods and a couple heavier spinning reels to give us a little more range.
Thanks for the info, guys. Tight lines.
