Big BFT gear??

Good numbers of big BFT (70lbs+) being caught locally, what does your quiver contain to go after them?

I spend too much $$ on YT fishing and surf fear, not enough on the big tuna. Was curious as to what everyone has.

Still gotta build the rods but here's what I'll be armed with...

40# rig Tib'd Penn 113H, Calstar 700H
50# rig Penn Baja Special 113HN, Calstar 700XH

Got my eyes on an Avet HX Raptor for a 60# reel but wow what a jump in price. I've got a Rainshadow RCJB84XH I would pair it up with. But with bluefin supposedly being line shy I'm not quite sure if I'll need this one.

Well Damn...  I have some heavy gear, but nothing specifically for big bruisers like that.  I have some modified 4/0 rigs, but my go to for that would be my:

Torium 30 loaded with 80# braid and 60# mono wind on leader.  (New carbontex drags and bearing in this year)
(7') Shimano 30-60 Bluewater Pacific Series rod.

Probably not ideal, but sure would get the job done until they started pushing triple digits and then I might be in some trouble.
I have some broom sticks and heavy duty 4/0's if that can't do it.  lol
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Broom stick and 4/0 with 50#. If they spool me they spool me. Whatever.

Went through what little gear I have left and my heaviest outfit is a 7' rod rated 30-80 and a Baja Special. I guess I need to do a little shopping ;)

Just refurb'd my Torium 20 and replaced the carbontex drags. That'll do the trick, though will back it with 80 braid for sure. Scored a 60 a few years back on my 16 and it kicked my ass. Never did get too deep in the spool, and it held up.

Chompin at the bit though. Paul went out this past weekend and scored a toad Yellow, but they had bait issues and never did get to the 43. Gotta go now!!

Planning on getting in on the action while we have it. Here's my plan

40lb: Tib'd 112H + 20-40 Californian
50lb: Saltist 40H + 30-50lb Terramar
60lb (in case the big boys want to play): 114HL + 80lb roller rod

Definitely missing a solid 60lb live bait rod in my arsenal

Probably bring along a 40lb setup for playing with butterfly jigs, but if the bruisers show up, sticking to live bait so I can use 3/0 heavy circle hooks to avoid getting chewed off.

So looking forward to this summer. Just saw a 172lb bluefin was speared 5mi from Dana Point!!!! Can anyone recall BFT that big this close to shore? Still waiting for the first cow tuna to be landed in local waters in a long time.

I'd bring a 30# outfit just in case you encounter a smaller grade of tuna and they're line shy.

Raishadow RCJB84xh with an Avet HXW. 500yrds 60lb braid with 50lb mono on top. Wahoo/tuna killer. I've never seen the braid. ::)
